Four science-backed ways to fix your email
Four science-backed ways to fix your emailFour science-backed ways to fix your emailSo many emails, so much anxiety, little time.Duke University behavioral economist Dan Ariely decided to take a lookif we really need to be notified of every email that comes our way, and came up with a solution. It starts with thinking about your behavior when you get an email.Think about thesecond an email rolls into your inbox, sound and all does the hair on your arms stand at attention? Do you get goosebumps out of sheer dread? A little rush of anxiety into your stomach? What doesnt help email reproduces as quickly as rabbits do. You get an email, you reply, and what happens? You get another email in return, and then youre right back where you started. It becomes difficult to make a dent in the flow of it.More than 205 billion emails were sent and received every day in 2015, according to technology market research firm The Radicati Group.Whatever your experience is, you probably have some sort of int ernal reaction (even if its not nearly as visceral). Now think of that reaction multiplied hundreds of times in your company, thousands of times across your industry and millions of times across the country. A lot of people are sending a lot of emails around the world, which means that out-of-control email has an impact on how we work.Read on to find out just how much of a toll your email has on your productivity, andwhat can be done to help you mange your inbox(es).Turn off email notificationsYour email can wait. Turn off notifications and set specification times to check it.Getting caught up in other things while attempting to be productive can take a toll on you.Ariely argues that there is a high cost of interruption, namely, that there is a time cost, performance cost and one on stress/emotional well-being.He realized that with no way do determine how important emails arebased on a ping sound alone, we spend a lot of time and energy on messages that we might not need to focus on immediately.Arielyasked people to look at the last 40 emails that came their way, and askedthem when they needed to have seen the information in them, according to his blog post.He found that 7% hadto be seen within an hour, 4% at some point during a four hour period, 17% by the end of the day, 10% by the end of the week, and 15% at some point. But heres the tggele apparently, 34% didnt need to be seen at all. He also found that just 12% of received emails needed to be seen within the first five minutes. This is the worst part of emails they have the power to throw off your mood. Getting interrupted at work constantly can negatively impact your physical and mental health, and thats all email does. Our data suggests that people compensate for interruptions by working faster, but this comes at a price experiencing more stress, higher frustration, time pressure and effort, according to a study by researchers Humboldt University in Berlin and the University of California, Irvine. Is that em ail worth the trouble of stopping what youre doing? Probably not. Turn off your inbox if you want to focus at work, and check email later.Sort by senderAriely thinks we should weigh the importance of each email. The first thing we should question is this idea that all emails are created equal. Should each email be able to interrupt people? Is the email from someones boss as important as the weekly industry newsletter hes signed up for? What if we designed a different system in which emails were not treated equally? Ariely wrote in a blog post.So he came up with a solutiona method of sorting emails based on the sender. In other words, depending on the sender, emails could be set to be received at different intervals. He helped create anapp calledFiltr, and found that just like in his prior research, people sorted their emails according to who sent them.He wrote that just 23% were set up with the immediate label,10% every-4-hours,19% the end of the day, 16% to the end of the week, 5% to some day and 27% had thenever label. This is one way to take control of your email.According to The Atlantic, Ariely has also helped create a web app called Shortwhale, whichlets you tell senders how you like to get your emails.Unsubscribe or FilterThe key to fighting email, Ariely says, is to reduce distractions. Fewer emails mean fewer distractions. If you get daily status updates, newsletters or even sales offers, consider either unsubscribing or filtering them into folders you can check later.Archive everything to empty your inboxFollowing Arielys theories, your inbox has a strong effect on your wellbeing. You can clear it out and keep only the emails you need to act on. The secret? Select everything you dont immediately need, and hit archive on your email client. All your old email will still be searchable, but it wont be staring you in the face and dragging you into past conversations.

6 ways to bounce back after a relationship meltdown
6 ways to bounce back after a relationship meltdown6 ways to bounce back after a relationship meltdownRelationship meltdowns happen to the best of us (and theyve certainly happened to me).As humans its only natural that we make mistakes, have freak-outs, and overreact sometimes. Lots of things can cause us to have a meltdown, from fear of abandonment to jealousy issues. We cant control the past, and once we freak out, whats done is done. Luckily, wecancontrol how we act after we have a meltdown, and thats whats going to make all the difference. Here are 6 steps for bouncing back after having arelationshipmeltdown.Step 1 Stay CalmIts not easy to stay calm when emotions are running wild, but its important to be chill when trying to repair a relationship after an emotion-fueled meltdown. Before you try talking to your partner to make amends or clear things up, you want to be in a relaxed state of mind. This way you cancommunicate effectivelyandnothave another freak out. Do whatever you go tta do to blow off some steam and de-stress, whether its heading to a kickboxing class, journaling, or taking a bath. Youll be ready to talk - and more importantly, listen - without yelling or giving an attitude to your partner.Step 2 Recognize what the real issue at hand isLook back at your meltdown and try to better understand it. What caused it? Is there something deeper than surface level that was a contributing factor? For example, if you had ajealous freak-outafter you saw your boyfriend like another girls Instagram picture, ask yourself what the real issue is. Are you really just mad that hes looking at other girls profiles, or are your feelings hurt because you feel like he doesnt value you or give you attention the way he used to?In situations like this, its usually the latter. This is the issue that you need to address.Step 3 Recognize what the issue looks like to your partnerYou know what Im about to sayput yourself in your partners shoesIf the situation was reversed, ho w would you feel? Hurt? Betrayed? Mistrusted? Lied to? You arent a mind reader, so youll have to communicate with your partner and ask how they feel. Clear, open communication will allow you to truly understand your partners emotions and stance on the situation. From there, you can figure out how tobounce backand make it better.Another tip try not to get defensive. It doesnt help and nobody wants to deal with thatStep 4 Leave your ego at the doorTrust me, I know its hard to let go of your ego for a minute and apologize, especially if you think you arentreallyin the wrong. Take a step back to evaluate your actions and how they put a strain on your relationship. Many of us love to play the blame game, but its crucial that youre able to take the blame and hold yourself accountable when necessary. Be able tomean itwhen you say, I know I messed up, and Im sorry. Your partner will know if your apology is sincere or not.You might even need to apologize to yourself Be kind and understanding so you can heal and not beat yourself up for making mistakes.Step 5 Figure out an action planWhat are you going to do to make the situation okay? How are you going to mend the relationship, regain trust, and so on? Sure,make-up sexis great, but its not going to fix all your problems. While its tempting to brush things under the rug and just move on, its all going to build up and possibly result in another meltdown if you dont address the underlying issues. So again, communicate, communicate, communicate Work through the awkwardness, talk to your partner, and figure out whats next for the both of you.On top of that, figure out how you can betteryourselfand how you can be a better partner. Problem solving isnt easy, but its essential in any type of relationship, and itll pay off.Step 6 Remember that no relationship is perfect. No matter how perfect someones life may look from the outside - in public orsocial media- you never really know how someone elses relationship is progressing. Y ou should know by now Social media is just an illusion Plus, its damaging to compare yourself to others, and the same rules apply for comparing your relationship to others relationships.Instead, focus on yourself and your partner - and what you can do to further nurture your partnership.A meltdown doesnt have to mean The EndIf youre in the process of recovering from a relationship meltdown, dont worry (remember step one Stay calm). Follow these steps and youll be well on the road to getting your relationship back to a good place. Also, consider individual orcouples therapyif things become more difficult than you both can handle. Theres no shame in seeking outside advice or counseling if it helps bring you closer to someone you love.Who knows, you might just mend your relationship so well that you and your partner will be even better off than you were beforeThis article first appeared on Talkspace.

Copywriting Tips for Creatives Who Hate Writing
Copywriting Tips for Creatives Who Hate WritingCopywriting Tips for Creatives Who Hate WritingCopywriting can be a tricky business for designers and other creative professionals, but its an essential skill to hone. Use unterstellung copywriting tips the next time youre tasked with a writing project.Every creative professional needs good communication abilities, and writing skills are essential for your career toolkit. From client briefs and emails to blog posts and brochure copy, designers and other creatives are frequently called upon to flex their writing muscles. If you find yourself easily frustrated and staring far too long at a blank Word document, these copywriting tips for nonwriters will help you face your fears and find your voice.1. Determine your topic and theme When it comes to copywriting tips, there is none more important than this one Before you begin writing, determine both your topic and your theme. Your topic is the subject you are writing about your theme is your point of view on that topic - the message you want to convey.2. Pick your pointsYou likely have a few key messages about your topic. In fact, these main points probably helped inform your theme. While you may have lots of ideas to share, try to group them under a few headings.3. Create an outlineAfter youve determined your topic, theme and main points, put together an outline. Once you have the bones of your piece in place, its easier to add the meat.4. Lower your standards (at first) While your inclination may be to start at the beginning, its OK to jump around within your outline. Add information as it comes to mind. Not every sentence has to be perfectly constructed or even grammatically correct. Your goal at this point is simply to get your thoughts down on the page.5. Flesh it outAfter youve dumped all your ideas into your outline, add your supporting research. Then comb back through your piece and turn phrases into complete sentences, add transitions, and vary your word choic es if youve referenced the same topic or idea several times.6. Punch it upYouve introduced your topic and laid out your main points, which all support your theme. Youve written a conclusion that reiterates your point of view or issues a call to action. Now its time to sell even harder. If youre describing a product or service, for example, focus on using language that helps the reader picture or feel the concept youre trying to convey. Connect with your readers by using power words such as you, free or new.7. Keep it cleanTake the time to revise and re-read your work several times, then use spell check. Though youre not a writer by trade, straightforward and error-free copy will get your ideas across in an authoritative, professional manner. Copy editing with care will make your writing stronger and more polished.Becoming a good writer takes practice, and even seasoned pros battle writers block. Remember that your objective is to create clear writing that is compelling and easy to u nderstand. Skip the flowery prose full of adjectives, metaphors and clichs. If you follow these copywriting tips, youll not only knock a daunting task off your to-do list, but youll also boost your communication cred.SUBSCRIBE TO THE BLOG

5 Reasons You Should Consider Moving for a New Job
5 Reasons You Should Consider Moving for a New Job5 Reasons You Should Consider Moving for a New JobI know what its like to move out of your comfort zone in order to gain a new level of skills. Over the past eight years, Ive lived in four different states and worked for four different companies. Being able to pick up and move gave me the opportunity to work for a number of well-respected companies Johnson Johnson, Microsoft, The New York Times, and Warner Bros. Entertainment.I know that moving can stressful, but for me, each time I relocated for a job, it was one of the best decisions Id ever made. The changes brought about a set of personal and professional challenges that forced me to grow. By uprooting my life, Ive been able to overcome my fears while enhancing my capabilities and growing my network of friends. Here are five reasons why you should consider moving for a job, too1. You learn to adapt.Being new to a city and having to adjust to its climate, environment, culture, and people requires you to develop a flexible mindset. Having grown up in San Francisco and later relocating to New York, Santa Barbara, Seattle, and Los Angeles, I learned to get up to speed on my surroundings as quickly as possible, so I could survive. After all, theres no better way to push yourself than by driving and getting s-lost in a new place.2. You can reinvent yourself.Moving to a city where you dont know anyone can be liberating. You can focus on developing areas of yourself that need improvement. The first time I relocated for a job, I made friends with fresh points of view. The new friends mannerisms, the way they spoke, and even their sense of style was new and refreshing. These new friendships allowed me to incorporate bits and pieces of them into the revamped identity I was creating for myself.3. You learn to open up yourself to others. When youre the new girl in town, people are generally willing to share their tips and tricks on the area. In work settings, as a newbie, asking my coworkers about places to eat or shop eventually resulted in me making friends with several of my colleagues. Im still friends with some of those colleagues over a decade later, staying in touch through social media. Each new interaction is an opportunity to learn about your new surroundings, slowly easing you into becoming a local.4. You give your brain a workout.Learning something new about your new home can have a ripple effect on your ability to contribute at work. Conquering a new city by establishing a rhythm for yourself - whether its going to a gym, finding a popular neighborhood restaurant, locating a grocery store you like, or even getting a library card - helps you to feel a sense of belonging. Tackling these essential steps in your new life can help build confidence so you are primed to accept bigger challenges in your new life.5. Vulnerability can lead to courage.Theres a quote by Anais Nin that I live by Life shrinks or expands in proportion to ones courag e. I believe that the smaller your perspective is on life, the less likely you are to take risks because if you dont allow new experiences to enter your life, you stifle your ability to expand. By acknowledging your fears and moving forward despite heart palpitations, you will undoubtedbly enrich your life.Nowadays, sites like Fairygodboss, Vault, and LinkedIn help you gather invaluable information about a company in another city or state. With a few clicks of the keyboard, you can unlock the door to your next big gig, ultimately enhancing your life experience. The act of leaving a familiar setting to undertake new adventures has enriched my intellectual and emotional capacities. Had I stayed in one spot and not moved around, I never would have met many of the people who are in my life today. For those of you toying with the idea of moving for a job this year, dont be afraid. Take incremental steps toward your next adventure and see how far you can stretch capabilities.A version of this post previously appeared on Fairygodboss, which helps women get the inside scoop on pay, corporate culture, benefits, and work flexibility. Video Interviewing Luxury or Hiring Revolution - Spark Hire
Video Interviewing Luxury or Hiring Revolution - Spark HireIt surprises me each time I hear of a recruiter or hiring manager who has yet to give video bewerberinterviewing a chance within their interview process. One of the comments that I have heard in the past from a recruiter is that video interviewing is a short cut around real recruiting. This causes me to wonder how other recruiters and hiring managers view video interviewing as a luxury or a useful hiring tool? Overall, I believe video interviews to be both luxury and a hiring revolution.Video Interviewing a Luxury? In some ways, I can understand how video interviewing could be considered a luxury to veteran recruiters. Much like social media, video interviewing allows a recruiter or hiring manager the ease of connecting with candidates.Today, flexible working hours and location are luxuries that we rarely saw in work spaces 10 years ago. Video interviewing enables us to more easily foster a flexible work environment for not o nly the recruiter or hiring manager but also for the candidate. So, is video interviewing indeed a luxury, making the life of a recruiter or hiring manager simpler? Can someone recruit without using video interviewing? Of courseHowever, the next thing to consider is how successful a recruiter can be in todays world without embracing this technology?Video Interviewing a Hiring Revolution? While video interviewing can be a luxury, there is no denying that it is an extremely useful tool in todays interview process.Video interviewing allows us to conduct more in-depth screens with candidates without missing out on the face-to-face value similar to what an in-person interview provides. If I am traveling or out of the office, I am no longer limited to unreliable phone conversations or scheduling limitations that require me to be physically in the office. Now, as long as I have internet connection in addition to my computer, tablet, or smart phone, I am able to thoroughly interview candidate s while also being able to provide a more personal feeling to the interview through video.Video allows me the flexible schedule that I need (and my candidates need) in order to see and speak with the best talent regardless of location. In addition, incorporating video into my interview process has allowed me the ability to efficiently and thoroughly interview candidates who are not in my local area. As a recruiter on a budget, travel expenses can become quite cumbersome. When searching for the best talent for my clients, I pride myself on my ability to build strong relationships with my candidates and to comprehensively provide a full assessment of a candidate to my client. I have found that video is much more helpful in this area versus phone conversation alone. With video, not only am I able to hear a candidates hesitation, passion, or excitement during an interview, but I am also able to see the candidates expressions. Being able to see how a candidate behaves during an interview p rovides much more insight and allows me to better read a candidates true interest and excitement in the available position.Whats your take on video interviews are they simply a luxury or do you also find them to be an important recruiting tool? Please share your thoughts in the comments below.Image gstockstudio/BigStock.com
